fear cuts deeper than the sword

Fear cuts deeper than the sword

Been thinking about joining a self defence class and never made it through the door?

Starting anything for the first time can be a nerve racking experience. Social anxiety preventing you from stepping through the door, simply can’t beat those pre class nerves?

This actually perfectly normal and the best way of dealing with this is to turn up early and meet the instructor. You will find that we are very used to meeting new students and will soon put you at ease.

What to expect during your first class

During your first class you will normally work with a more experienced student who will help you. You won’t be left to the back of the class feeling like a complete plonker.

  • Relax have fun, don’t take yourself too seriously
  • Don’t expect to be like Jackie Chan after the first class – simply turning up is a good start
  • Listen to your teacher – have an open mind

Every class will involve some spirit training (working on your fitness and mindset) all we ask is that you do your best. There will be no high expectations and no one will be judging you. During the class you will be working on basic self defence drills which involve a lot of repetition. Muscle memory is the key to learning self defence, building co-ordination will not happen straight away. Be patient and don’t expect miracles after your first class. At the end of the class their will normally be a small test to see if you can remember what you have learned.

Aches and pains

Don’t be surprised if you get the odd bump or two. Training is physical, it has to be. We haven’t got Jedi powers here, we are teaching you to defend yourself – the ability to fight back. When you get home take a hot bath and relax, if you are sore in the morning it might help to take anti-inflammatory pain killers if you are ok with taking them. You will soon get used it, it’s a part of training.

Getting through the first class is half the battle

Once you have got that first class out or the way, you might even start looking forward to the next one. Train as much as you can, and remember what you put in is what you will get out. In six months time with consistent training you will notice massive difference in you health and well being.
